ISIS takes responsibility for Barcelona terror attack

In a photograph shown by public broadcaster RTVE, three people were lying on the ground in the street of the northern Spanish city Thursday afternoon, apparently being helped by police and others.

As police search for answers, here's what we know so far.

London resident Charlie Parsons, 58, who was on vacation in Barcelona, was riding his bike when the attack happened about 20 meters or so away.

Peritz said it seemed likely the incidents in Barcelona, Alcanar, and Cambrils were linked.

Witnesses said the white van zigzagged at high speed down Las Ramblas, a busy avenue thronged with tourists, knocking down pedestrians and leaving bodies strewn across the ground.

It adds: 'Attacks could be indiscriminate...you should be vigilant and follow the instructions of the local authorities'. I saw him when the van stopped. A third said he saw a van driving "around 80" kph (50 mph).

He said the van driver made off on foot and is not believed to be armed.

Two other suspects have been arrested.

The perpetrators' motive is still unclear.

The Islamic State terror group claimed responsibility for the attack, the deadliest on Spanish soil since more than 190 people died in the Madrid train bombs in 2004.

That compares with the 6.3 billion daily average for the past 20 trading days, according to Thomson Reuters data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.2 per cent yesterday and the Nasdaq Composite Index lost 1.9 per cent.

This post has been updated as new details have been reported. "He zigzagged from side to side into the kiosks, pinning as many people as he could, so they had no escape".

Laia González, 22, a recent university graduate who lives nearby, was getting ready to go out and shop with her parents when they heard screaming.

Hundreds of tourists and locals fled in panic, seeking sanctuary inside shops, restaurants and churches amid fears that terrorists were still wreaking havoc.

Belgium's foreign minister said a Belgian was among the dead.

Police say the suspects were carrying bomb belts and had run over six civilians with a vehicle.

People have been told to avoid the area. Their exhibition game for tonight has been cancelled and the team will return to Clemson as previously scheduled tomorrow morning.

Was there a second attack?

In a separate incident, Catalan police tweeted that a driver had run over two police officers at a security checkpoint in Barcelona and that the driver had been found near the city.

The two officers suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization, according to police. However, some reports say the Moroccan national, identified as Driss Oukabir, whose name was used to rent the van, handed himself in after seeing his photo in media reports, claiming his identification documents had been stolen before the attack and that he was not involved.

Investigators said they are working on the theory that the attacks in Cambrils and Barcelona, as well as an explosion in the town of Alancar on Wednesday, are linked.
