US, Japan issue stern warning to N. Korea

The threat had come after US President Donald Trump warned Pyongyang of'fire and fury over intercontinental ballistic missile development

According to the Financial Times, the U.S. is struggling to stitch together an global coalition that will successfully deter North Korea from its nuclear ambitions after the regime conducted a string of new missile tests, including a long-range missile last month that could target the US. The US leader said any threat from the northern half of the Korean Peninsula would be met with "fire and fury like the world has never seen".

North Korea has conducted several missile tests in recent months, which have been slammed by the US.

"Together, we will deter, and if necessary defeat, any threat", Mattis said in a news conference with Tillerson and their Japanese counterparts following a meeting at the State Department.

However, chief White House strategist Steve Bannon said there was "no military solution" to North Korea's nuclear threats because of the North's massed artillery targeting the South Korean capital, apparently contradicting Trump's tough warnings to Pyongyang.

"Knowing that North Korea sits with a significant capability already within their grasp, I think it is only prudent that they fully understand the consequences, should they make a bad choice for themselves", Tillerson said. On Twitter, Mr Trump called the move "a very wise and well reasoned decision". "I read those", Mr Tillerson said.

USA fears about North Korea's missile and nuclear bomb programs have grown in recent weeks.

Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera is expected to explain Tokyo's plans during talks with US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis in Washington on Thursday, government sources told the Asahi Shimbun.

North Korea has repeatedly threatened to target Japan, which hosts around 54,000 USA military personnel, as well as South Korea and the United States with its missiles.

Japan has remained a loyal sidekick to the U.S. on North Korea, exhibiting no dismay about Mr Trump's "fire and fury" comments, even as other other world leaders balked at the warlike rhetoric.

The defense ministry has, thus far, taken steps to counter any potential launches of ballistic missiles by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) by deploying high-tech Aegis advanced radar-equipped destroyers.

The Security Consultative Committee continued to build on a joint statement issued by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on February 10.

Tokyo has been increasingly concerned about North Korea's nuclear and missile development programs, saying that they have reached "a new level of threat".

The United States and Japan will step up their defense cooperation to deal with the threat from nuclear-armed North Korea as tensions in East Asia remain high, officials from the two allies said on Thursday.
