Donald Trump says North Korea made 'wise' choice by forgoing missile attack

In recent months, China has joined with Russian Federation in calling for the United States to suspend the annual military drills, which enrage North Korean officials every year.

The recent deescalation on both sides is good news for those anxious about a potential US-North Korea war.

US President Donald Trump praised North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Wednesday for appearing to back down on his threat to launch missiles toward the US territory of Guam.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un took power on the death of his father and longtime leader Kim Jong-il in 2011.

He said the military was developing "credible, viable military options" upon orders from Trump. "Our government will do everything it can to prevent war from breaking out", he said in his speech Tuesday.

"My advice to our leadership is that we not dial back our exercises", he said.

Mr Lavrov warned "we can't support ideas by some of our partners to suffocate North Korea economically with all the negative and tragic humanitarian consequences for its citizens".

America has a robust military presence in the Pacific.

The AFP quoted the president as saying: "All South Koreans have worked so hard together to rebuild the country from the ruins of the Korean War".

S&P said it would lower South Korea's credit rating if geopolitical tensions related to the DPRK escalate to a point that affects the country's economic, fiscal or external performance.

He said key personnel like Secretary of Defence James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson were tyring to guide Mr Trump, but the President's use of Twitter made that hard.

Moon, who took office on May 10 after a snap election after the ouster of his conservative predecessor over a corruption and influence-peddling scandal, said Seoul is in close communication with Washington over the North Korean problem.

That same day, Trump stressed that North Korean threats will be met with "fire and fury like nothing the world has ever seen".

But Moon said Seoul effectively had a veto on military action by the United States, its security ally and protector.

North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile last month for the first time, and US intelligence agencies assess that Pyongyang can build a nuclear warhead small enough to fit atop a long-range missile, although it's not clear if it can target USA cities.

Moon's pushback was the latest indication that Trump's unorthodox approach to foreign policy, coupled with Pyongyang's rapid progress toward its goal of nuclear missiles that can reach the mainland USA, was putting new strain on the long-standing alliance.

The latest missile tests led to a sharp rise in tensions. It also conducted two underground nuclear tests in 2016.
