Cook passes 200 as England grinds down West Indies

Tom Westley made only eight before he was trapped in front by Miguel Cummins at Edgbaston

England's Joe Root and Alastair Cook crafted superb centuries to lead the hosts to a commanding 348 for three on the opening day of their first day-night test against Windies on Thursday.

But before falling lbw on DRS to Roston Chase (4-113) - pushing to leg and missing - he had spent nearly nine-and-a-half hours at the crease this time and hit 33 fours from 407 balls.

After winning the toss on a lovely sunny day of the first ever day/night test match in England, Root and Cook lead the way for the hosts with brilliant hundreds.

By tea, nine overs into their first innings, West Indies were already braced for a gruelling twilight examination. The one disappointment for England was that they lost Dawid Malan for 65 to what became the last ball of the session following the Middlesex batsman's maiden Test fifty. "We just have to look forward to tomorrow", Chase argued. "It's just one game, the series is not lost, we have believe, regroup, and come back strongly".

Only Jermaine Blackwood, who made a defiant first-innings 79 not out and persevering paceman Kemar Roach, who bowled better than figures of two for 86 in 28 overs suggested, could take much from a match that left the men from the Caribbean still without a Test win in England since 2000.

"It's obviously very disappointing, we didn't show enough fight", Holder said after the match.

That resistance was ended, though, by Roland-Jones, who first bowled Hope and then trapped Dowrich lbw to reduce West Indies to 101 for six.

Barcelona increase Coutinho bid
Barcelona were offering the Premier League outfit just £80m in guaranteed fees - and even that was spread out over FIVE years. Ernesto Valverde's side begin their Liga campaign against Real Betis on Sunday.

"It will mean nothing though if we don't back it up tomorrow, so for Cooky to be 153 not out, is great".

Cook completed his 74-ball 50 on the stroke of lunch with a single to cover off Roston Chase to add to his 10 of England's 22 fours at that point.

But that was as good as it got for Stoneman, brought in after England dropped Keaton Jennings following a run of low scores during the preceding 3-1 home Test series victory against South Africa. Chase followed up with the wickets of Stokes, Ali, and Cook for his 4-113, but all it did was limit the damage.

Nonetheless, for England's long-term well-being, the sight of Malan's first significant score on the board was at least as encouraging as the huge number once again clocking up next to Cook's name.

England have announced they will take an unchanged 13-man squad to Headingley for the second Test, which begins on Friday.

"I was really appreciative of the way Blackwood played", Holder said.

He may not be offered quite so many half-volleys in Australia, should this innings go on to book his place on the Ashes tour, but it is a Test batsman's duty to take advantage when the going is in your favour - a lesson that his senior partner demonstrated in no uncertain terms.
