Finnish Police Received Tip on Radicalized Turku Stabbing Suspect

Suspect: Abderrahman Mechkah an 18-year-old asylum seeker from Morocco has been named as the main suspect in the terror attack in Turku west Finland on Friday

The suspected knifeman, an 18-year-old Moroccan asylum seeker named as Abderrahman Mechkah, was shot in the leg and arrested on Friday as people were stabbed in the city on Finland's Baltic coast, 160 km (100 miles) west of Helsinki.

Police have requested that all five detainees should be held in pre-trial detention.

Finnish broadcaster MTV, citing an unnamed source, said the suspect had been denied asylum in Finland, although police said he had only been "part of the asylum process".

Candles and flowers have been left at the makeshift memorial for the victims of Friday's stabbings at the Turku Market Square.

Elsewhere in the Premier League , West Brom continued their impressive start to the season with another 1-0 victory, this time away at Burnley .

The crimes are being treated as murder and attempted murder with terrorist intent, the court said an emailed statement.

Police earlier said the role of four other Moroccan men, detained over possible links to the Turku attack, was yet to be fully established. He is thought to be one of a dozen members of a jihadi cell that first planned a bomb attack but switched to a vehicle attack after improvised explosives they were building unexpectedly went off, destroying a rental house they were using as a base of operations in the town of Alcanar, south of Barcelona. The Legal Register Centre said Mechkah had no previous criminal record in Finland.

Investigators believe the attacker had specifically targeted women.

As Finland investigates yesterday's stabbing attack, in which 2 people were murdered, as an act of terrorism, Spain maintains its level 4 security alert. Both of those killed were women, as were six of the eight wounded, including one who was reported to have been with her baby.
