Celtics to add 2020 second-rounder to Irving deal

Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony

The Celtics are throwing in a second-round pick in 2020 to close this deal, which was in limbo due to questions about Isaiah Thomas' injured hip.

But while he was adored by Cleveland fans, Irving struggled playing in the shadow of LeBron James, and shortly after the Cavs were beaten in this year's Finals by the Warriors, a disgruntled Irving demanded a trade. Irving has played in the last three NBA Finals with Cleveland and hit the game winning three in the 2016 Finals that brought the Cavs their first title in NBA history. Meanwhile, Isaiah Thomas promised he will be "the same player" after recovering from his hip injury.

Don't get me wrong.

In order to understand why the Cavaliers shipped one of their brightest stars, here's some background to the whole situation.

While team sources said they were considering all options with the trade - either side had until 10 a.m. Thursday to void the deal - the most likely scenario of Cleveland receiving a small sweetener from the Celtics is what materialized.

Texas plant at risk of explosion following Harvey
He said the company has no way to prevent a fire or potential explosion near the plant that is swamped by about six feet of water. The comments from Rowe come one day after a statement in which the company declared the situation at the plant to be "serious".

It remains unclear when Thomas will return to action. The deal would enable the Cavaliers to acquire Paul George and Eric Bledsoe in exchange for Kyrie Irving.

Veteran guard Jose Calderon and second-year guard Kay Felder can not be relied on for starters minutes at this point.

When Thomas is right, he is an explosive scorer who was third in the National Basketball Association with 28.9 points per game a year ago. "I think it was a great deal". But it also ensures that in case LeBron does decide to leave at the end of next season, they can afford to rebuild using the draft picks. His small stature makes it easy for opponents to shoot over or dribble past him, leaving the rest of the team to pick up Thomas' slack. Irving has an opt-out clause he can exercise in two years, but he has indicated that he might be willing to stay in Boston, and that team is confident it can keep him. Ditching their best future asset seems like the riskiest play, especially given the talent at the top of next year's draft.

For what it's wroth, the 2020 pick that Cleveland will receive from Miami was sent to Boston in the Zoran Dragic salary dump in July 2015.
