Talking is 'not the answer' over North Korea

US stocks join global losses after North Korea missile test

North Korea has launched a number of missile tests recently, in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions - including one flight yesterday that sent a vehicle over the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

However North Korea vowed it won't "flinch an inch" in the face of USA threats and warned it was "the first step of the military operation of the (North Korean military) in the Pacific and a meaningful prelude to containing Guam".

Guam's homeland security adviser, George Charfauros, isn't getting very excited about this latest threat.

The missile test further increased tension in east Asia as US and South Korean forces conducted annual military exercises on the Korean peninsula, angering Pyongyang which sees the war games as a preparation for invasion.

The launch, it added, was timed to mark the 107th anniversary of the "disgraceful" Japan-Korea treaty of 1910, under which Tokyo colonized the Korean Peninsula.

Just days after Trump's threat to the North, both Mattis and Tillerson wrote a Wall Street Journal commentary assuring Pyongyang "the USA has no interest in regime change or accelerated reunification of Korea".

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday dismissed the idea of negotiating with North Korea in response to Kim Jong Un's latest provocation in test-firing a missile over Japan.

The president has become increasingly frustrated with North Korea in recent months and has threatened that all options, including military action, are "on the table".

North Korea has said it won't place its nuclear program on the negotiating table unless the USA drops its "hostile" policies.

But the Croatian came into the tournament having not played a match since losing the Wimbledon final to Roger Federer because of an adductor problem.

Trump did not suggest what he thinks should replace talking.

"Launching missiles across Japanese airspace is an extremely unsafe act, [President Trump and I] were in complete agreement the global community needs to strengthen pressure [on North Korea]", Abe said.

"The two leaders agreed that North Korea poses a grave and growing direct threat to the United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, as well as to countries around the world", according to the White House.

The show of force came two days after North Korea fired of an intermediate-range missile over Japan.

The MDA said the test gives the naval component of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defence System "enhanced capability to defeat ballistic missiles in their terminal phase".

Abe spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump by phone for about half an hour that night.

They also reaffirmed their view to peacefully resolve North Korea's nuclear issue and apply maximum sanctions on the regime to bring them back to the dialogue table.

North Koreans are particularly outraged at this year's Washington-Seoul joint war games.
