Walter Becker, Steely Dan Guitarist and Co-Founder, Dies at 67

Steely Dan guitarist and co-founder Walter Becker has sadly passed away.

He died Sunday at the age of 67, according to his personal website.

Becker met his longtime musical collaborator Donald Fagen when both were attending Bard College.

First as a bassist then guitarist, Walter Becker said that he had grown up listening to great jazz musicians, like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins.

Fagen described his bandmate on Sunday as "cynical about human nature, including his own, and hysterically amusing".

Becker had recently missed the band's July performances in Los Angeles and NY as part of the Classic West and Classic East festivals.

Becker had performed with Steely Dan as recently as April.

Steely Dan is one of the most important bands to come out of the 70's. In 1971, they moved to California and formed Steely Dan-with the name coming from William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch.

Becker's official site announced the guitarist's death; no cause of death or other details were provided.

Such eclectic tastes made the duo's music a magnet for filmdom's irony fans: the Bobby and Peter Farrelly used songs from the "Aja" album as a plot driver for the 2000 film "Me, Myself & Irene". Steely Dan has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, and the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. In a more recent interview with Billboard Fagen gave a terse response when asked about Becker's health, "Walter's recovering from a procedure and hopefully he'll be fine very soon".

He began touring again with Fagen in 1993, after which Steely Dan released two new albums.
