4 million personal records of Time Warner cable customers exposed

Millions of records containing Time Warner Cable subscribers' personal information were leaked to the internet an investigation has found

MacKeeper developer Kromtech has discovered that BroadSoft, a frequent partner to service providers, was storing over 4 million Time Warner Cable customer records on Amazon cloud servers without a password.

The other breach was uncovered by technology news website Gizmodo, which found information on sensitive government workers employed by security company TigerSwan. In some cases, there were duplicated records, implying that the 4 million leaks may be half. But due to the size of the cache, however, the researchers could not immediately say precisely how many were affected. The leaked data included usernames, emails addresses, MAC addresses, device serial numbers, and financial transaction information-though it does not appear that any Social Security numbers or credit card information was exposed.

While Charter acquired Time Warner Cable in a $79 billion blockbuster deal last year, the data collected and exposed ranges from before the deal (2010) until this year - and also includes some data from Bright House Networks and AMC.

Other databases revealed billing addresses, phone numbers and other contact inform for at least hundreds of thousands of TWC subscribers.

The security researchers were investigating a different data breach incident at World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

The BroadSoft data was not properly configured to allow public access in AWS, Kromtech said.

U.S. warns N Korea of "massive military response"
President Moon Jae In said his country would not allow its neighbour to continue to advance its nuclear and missile technologies. The test at 12:30 pm local time was a "perfect success", according to North Korean state media.

They discovered two repositories hosted using Amazon's S3 cloud storage service, neither requiring a password for access.

Charter added that after the unblocked server was isolated, Broadsoft got rid of the information and started a joint investigation into the matter.

TWC, which was acquired by Charter Communications past year and is now called Spectrum, said the data related to users of the MyTWC mobile application used to remotely manage accounts, which was developed by BroadSoft. On the other hand, a BroadSoft spokesperson believes that the vulnerable data didn't feature sensitive details.

Representatives of BroadSoft did not immediately respond to a query.

"A vendor has notified us that certain non-financial information of legacy Time Warner Cable customers who used the My TWC app became potentially visible by external sources".

Verizon isn't the only big USA telecom whose corporate ally left customer data out in the open. "We apologize for the frustration and anxiety this causes, and will communicate directly to customers if their information was involved in this incident".
