WATCH LIVE: Chance the Rapper announces details of $2.2M for CPS

Chance the Rapper announced Friday that his SocialWorks organization has raised $2.2 million for the Chicago Public Schools' arts programs.

Chance the Rapper announces a $1 million donation to Chicago Public Schools on March 6 at Westcott Elementary School in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood.

"In the summertime when the city's at its most lovely point, when people are supposed to be outside enjoying themselves, there's an undercurrent of something ominous", he said Friday in announcing the grants at the Harold Washington Cultural Center. The principals from one school said the money will help them expand their arts education.

During that time, principals will regularly meet with members of SocialWorks to be guided on budgeting as well as staffing the programs.

Kenyan president blasts court over poll cancellation
However, violence broke out as opposition activists cried foul in days of unrest which claimed the lives of at least 28 people. The country was ravaged by post election violence in 2007, which left 1,200 people dead and another 600,000 displaced.

"These are the two most pressing things on my mind", he said, "Finally sending my daughter to school and the unease of the city she's entering into".

"Nando's has a history of supporting public schools and community non-profits when they open new restaurants, which I really admire", Chance said in a press statement. She intends to use the grant to create a dance studio in an unused classroom and teach ballet, hip-hop and modern dance. The event, hosted by James Corden and featuring special guest performances, will celebrate "teachers, parents, principals, and students that convey leadership". A second batch of $10,000 donations were given to 12 other schools later that month, when the Chicago Bulls donated $1 million to the musician's campaign. He said he hopes state lawmakers take heed.

"Each conversation, every contribution, every tweet brings this city and the nation a step closer to providing a well-rounded, quality education for each and every child", Chance said.
