French Fashion Houses Ban Size Zero Models

France banned ultra-thin models under a 2015 law though it only stipulated models needed a doctor’s note attesting to their health based on age weight and body shape

Some fashion powerhouses sending the message that ultra thin models are out.

The Charter on Working Relations With Fashion Models and Their Well-Being says models under the age of 16, female models under a size 2, and male models under a size 34 will no longer be cast for the two fashion houses' runway shows.

The CEO of Kering, Francois-Henri Pinault spoke of the decision, which goes into effect in advance of Paris Fashion Week later this month, in a statement to Reuters.

Models under 16 are also banned from the brands' shows and shoots, and models under 18 face an extra set of requirements.

Ultimately, this important move by the fashion community could not only protect models working the industry from health risks caused by malnutrition, but also help reduce the encouragement of unhealthy body types.

The ban on size zero models also has some extra restrictions.

The pact also bans the conglomerates' labels from using female models below a French women's size 34, which is typically equivalent to a US size 0-2 and a United Kingdom size 6.

In May, a French law requiring models to present a doctor s certificate attesting to their health and was introduced to try to tackle the problem of the industry promoting thinness and unattainable beauty ideals.
