Georgia orders compulsory evacuation of coast as Irma roars closer

Gulf Co. Prepares for Hurricane Irma; Declares Emergency

N.C. Emergency Management Director Mike Sprayberry says while it's too early to know exactly how Hurricane Irma might affect the state, it is never too early to prepare.

As Hurricane Irma takes aim at the U.S., Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has declared a state of emergency for six coastal counties. With the memories of flooding and damage from last year's Hurricane Matthew still on the minds of so many, officials had little problem stirring residents to action.

North Carolina is still several days away from feeling the effects of Irma, but could begin to feel wind from the storm Sunday and see rough surf and beach erosion as early as today.

US president Donald Trump has approved the Palmetto State's emergency declaration, issuing an order on Thursday afternon confirming that "an emergency exists in the State of SC". Students were evacuated Thursday morning, and the campus will be closed Friday, the report added.

Syria Threatens With 'Serious Consequences' Following Chemical Plant Attack
Israeli fighter jets have struck a military facility in western Syria, killing two people, according to a Syrian commander. Israel has refused to comment on the strikes but the Syrian army general command has confirmed the attack.

Meanwhile, McMaster signed an executive order Thursday calling for the immediate evacuation of 143 hospitals, nursing homes and other medical facilities in eight coastal counties.

"It is not too soon to get ready", Cooper said Wednesday. The powerful storm, now at Category 5, is expected to reach SC late Monday.

Gov. Henry McMaster says he is considering evacuation orders for parts of SC as Hurricane Irma threatens.

"Just because it might be tropical storm, doesn't mean this storm isn't going to be risky, ' Cooper said".
