NASA has detected two solar flares of high intensity

Biggest flare in two decades

"Flash has already given the deterioration in the quality of connections in Europe and America", - said the expert.

On Wednesday, September 6th, the sun released two sizeable solar flares into the earth's atmosphere. Flares can last for minutes or hours, raising the local temperature of the Sun's surface by tens of millions of degrees. That watch remains in effect through Saturday. It's hard to understand how much larger the sun is than the Earth. Physicists believe the magnetic field can become twisted and looped as the Sun rotates, until finally these lines "snap".

That means that these charged particles can slam into Earth's magnetic field, supercharging auroras when they interact with neutral particles in the planet's upper atmosphere.

The most recent X9 flare took place in 2006, at X9.0.

Space.com said the sun can release a cloud of energetic plasma from its body in an event called a coronal mass ejection, CME. High-frequency radio signals blacked out across the daytime side of Earth for about an hour after Wednesday's initial bursts, according to National Geographic.

These jets of ionized matter are projected - at high speed into and beyond the crown of the sun -hundreds of thousands of kilometres outward.

It's the biggest flare on record in a decade. While we're treated to a fantastic light show in the form of the northern lights (which are expected tonight, due to a CME that left the sun on Tuesday), powerful CMEs can cause power grid disruptions.

Huge solar flare recorded by NASA on September 6.

Waiting for the exact answer with the help of some coronagraph imagery Rob Steenburgh, SWPC space scientist said: "It was accompanied by radio emissions that suggest there's a potential for a CME, we have to wait until we get some coronagraph imagery that would capture that event for a definitive answer". X-class flares, they noted, are the most intense, while the number reveals more information about their strength.
