Ezekiel Elliott Granted TRO, Suspension Delayed Until Investigation Is Over

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott hands off to teammate running back Ezekiel Elliott during an NFL football practice in Frisco Texas Thursday Sept. 7 2017

United States District Court Judge Amos Mazzant ruled today in favor of Ezekiel Elliott, granting him a preliminary injunction against the NFL. There is a chance the 22-year-old will be allowed to play the entire 2017 season as the case makes its way through the court, according to multiple reports.

The ruling clears the way for Elliott to maintain what his lawyers argued Tuesday was the "status quo", NFL Players Association attorneys were looking for, meaning, as Jeffrey Kessler described on Tuesday, "the league's investigation into domestic violence allegations against Elliott continues while he still plays".

Per Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News, Elliott is eligible to play in all 16 regular-season games for the Dallas Cowboys after temporary restraining order granted.

Why was Elliott's legal team not allowed to interview Thompson?

The temporary restraining order bars the National Footall League from imposing its suspension for the duration of the lawsuit.

New Report Suggests Joe Paterno Knew About Earlier Sandusky Abuse
In a new report, Joe Paterno admitted that there had been a previous complaint against Jerry Sandusky (l.). Both pleaded guilty in March to misdemeanor child endangerment and were sentenced in July .

Elliott was suspended for six games of the regular season for violating the league's personal conduct policy stemming from domestic violence allegations past year. "It is in this light the court views [arbitrator] Harold Henderson's decisions to exclude [Elliott's ex-girlfriend Tiffany] Thompson and Commissioner [Roger] Goodell as necessary witnesses, as gross errors resulting in a fundamentally unfair hearing". It seems that the league chose to punish Elliott for not cooperating more than anything, and Mazzant took issue with how the league went about suspending Elliott.

Long story short: This contentious fight between the National Football League and NFLPA could take a while.

The NFL and Elliott continue to debate the facts at the heart of his case.

The judge also disagreed with the NFL's claim that the union lacked standing to sue before Henderson issued his ruling, reminding the league that the arbitrator had already denied the union's requests to cross-examine Thompson and call Goodell. "Elliott did not receive a fundamentally fair hearing", the court said.

"We strongly believe that the investigation and evidence supported the commissioner's decision and that the process was meticulous and fair throughout", the league said in a statement. "However, in the commissioner's judgment, there has been no persuasive evidence presented on your behalf with respect to how Ms. Thompson's obvious injuries were incurred other than conjecture based on the presence of some of her bruising, which pre-dates your arrival in Columbus on July 16, 2016". "Zeke was one of the best players in the league a year ago if not the best".
