Meet Harvey and Irma: a Love That's Weathered 75 Years

Unlike the hurricanes, the relationship between Harvey and Irma Schluter has been far from stormy.

"I don't know how they've done that, to have a Harvey and Irma", said Irma Schluter of the powerful hurricanes bearing their names.

After marrying in 1942 and returning to Washington, the pair made a decision to become foster parents, ultimately opening their home to 120 children-many with physical and mental disabilities-over the years.

After Hurricane Harvey has wreaked havoc in Texas and as Hurricane Irma threatens Florida, another Harvey and Irma on the other side of the country spread nothing but love.

The couple celebrated their 75th anniversary in March, an event that was marked by an article in the Spokesman-Review of Spokane. "It's really unusual to have our names attached to the hurricanes", she said.

"He said come on let's get married, and I said oh no I have to finish school", said Irma.

They've never been through a hurricane personally.

Nancy Pelosi Actually Dictated Trump's Last Tweet to Him
And I said if we can get something to happen, we're going to sign it and we're going to make a lot of happy people". Trump later tweeted that he would "revisit" the program if Congress can not "legalize" it in six months.

"I don't know how they've done that, to have a Harvey and Irma", Irma Schluter said. Harvey has been used as a storm name at least seven times in the past. "I'd try and help some people, I don't know how".

Irma, 92, and Harvey, 104, have three kids and a bunch of grandkids, but they've also helped raise over 100 foster kids.

As for the hurricanes, The Times reports the names are on a six-year rotation through the World Meteorological Organization - unless the storms are major. But never did this couple from Spokane, Washington, think this year's hurricane season would make them famous.

Mr. Schluter opened his own business in the Hillyard suburb of Spokane, Harvey's Shop, and worked as a barber for 45 years.

With such big hearts, it's no surprise that the Schluters are devastated by the destruction caused by their hurricane namesakes.

Irma said she's still smitten. And they raised foster children, usually four at a time, but sometimes five or six if there was a need. "I said, 'What are you kids talking about?' They're always trying to mess around to get me on something!"
