Nadal to Meet Anderson in Quest for 3rd US Open Title

Juan Martin del Potro (right) of Argentina and Roger Federer of Switzerland meet at the net after their 2017 US Open Men's Singles quarter finals match at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in NY on September 6.

The two time US Open champion faced Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine in his fourth round match and won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, not giving Dolgopolov any margin for error. He was playing with confidence, was very good, and he was more aggressive than me. The other semi-final is between two debutants at this level in Kevin Anderson and Pablo Carreno Busta, both of whom lay claim to just one grand slam quarter-final finish in their careers.

Talking about his opponent on Sunday, Nadal said that he will not underestimate his opponent. He served well, had some big shots when he needed to.

Although Anderson has some big-time weapons, particularly on his serve, the world No. 1 is playing, as he likes to say, with calm, clear thought and with the peace of mind that he is not dealing with any injuries.

Should Nadal reach the final, it would be the Spaniard's 23rd major final appearance.

The Argentine, victor of the US Open 2009, has made illusion for a set, finding the power in the service and the accuracy in the forehand that had allowed it to spill over Federer in four sets 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (10/8), 6-4.

Sensational finalist from the bottom half of the tournament was the South African Kevin Anderson, who managed to turn the tide of the match against Pablo Carreno Busta. The Spanish master then changed tactics and strung nine games together after dropping the first set to beat the 2009 champion 4-6 6-0 6-3 6-2.

Nadal stressed the importance of reaching the final of the last Grand Slam of the season, which he considers the most important match of the season. But del Potro could very well give Nadal a tougher match.

Del Potro is 5-8 over his career against Nadal, but they've only played once in the last four years-a 2016 del Potro triumph at the Rio Olympics.

"But when you have this draw, you have to do your best to take advantage, so I think that is a really good tournament for me".

As a result, the former world number four is match-tough even if he doubts he has the stamina to last the distance against Nadal.

"Of course it is a pity, but Juan Martin deserves it more".

For the first 50 minutes, del Potro's walloping groundstrokes and aggressiveness offered a challenge for Nadal. This year, Del Potro's run in Flushing has been nothing short of remarkable.

Del Potro, who says he likes the match-up against Nadal, has also won his two most recent meetings with the Spaniard, though he insisted that this would be very different to any of their previous encounters.
