NASA just recorded the biggest sun solar flare in almost a decade

The sun just belched out the strongest solar flare in 12 years

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which observes the sun constantly, also imaged the both events. Although solar radiation cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans, it can disrupt communications signals.

The Sept. 6 solar flares were the first in the X-class - the most intense on the five-class scale - seen since December 2006, with X-ray emissions from the second and much larger of the two at some 1,000 times normal output.

The team said flare observation using ground-based telescopes is hard because X-class flares can form and reach their peak intensities in little more than five minutes. "We're not having X-flares every day for a week, for instance - the activity is less frequent, but no less potentially strong".

Early this week, the sun released a solar flare that shut down communications made via satellite. Solar cycles last on average eleven years.

It then appears increasingly likely to rip into heavily populated South Florida early Sunday. Still, the logistics of two major missions in a row were "a heavy lift".

But the last few solar cycle have been baffling scientists. This is the phase where eruptions from the sun become increasingly rare. A-Class flares are the weakest, while X-Class are the most energetic.

There might be another chance for auroras in the days ahead: Two more solar flares erupted early today, at 2:10 a.m. and 5;02 a.m. PT. However, 3 hours later, a second flare erupted. The larger of the two was classified as X9.3, the strongest since an X17 flare in 2005. Both are created when the sun's interior contorts its own magnetic fields-as the magnetic field snaps like a rubber band it releases a huge amount of energy into space. The magnetically filed activities result to an outward blast of energy that dramatically increases the solar surface temperature.

Destructive radiations from flares can not entirely penetrate Earth's atmosphere. However, when these flares are intense enough, they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where Global Positioning System and communications signals travel.
