Northern Ireland 'to have different Brexit deal'

The paper on data protection says Britain may continue to use data gathered before exit day once it has left the European Union as long as it continues applying the same level of protection, otherwise it must destroy the data.

"The group would deal with the specific challenges arising from the new European Union cyber legislation, Brexit and work with governments in order to protect businesses in Ireland and the UK", Dwyer said.

The EU, which will have 27 member states after Brexit, wants to solve key exit issues before opening talks about any future trade cooperation with Britain.

However, under Union law, this is only possible if the United Kingdom stays in the customs union and in the single market/ the European Economic Area.

He has said "a lot more substantial work" was needed on the border issue.

"But as it was the UK's decision to leave the European Union, it is the UK's responsibility to come forward with solutions to overcome the challenges for the island of Ireland".

At a later press meeting Coveney said he shared the scepticism of Ireland's custom authorities on the UK's proposed options for resolving the border trade.

"I've been very disappointed by the United Kingdom position as expressed last week, it seems to be backtracking on the initial commitments", the French politician said, reiterating London needs to respect financial commitments that go beyond the Brexit date.

Referring again to the US-Canadian border, he added: "The average clearance time for a vehicle going through that - and there's a choke point remember - is 53 seconds.

All those things will make it possible for the border to be as light touch as it is today", Davis said.

The UK government has ruled out any move towards joint authority over Northern Ireland involving both the London and Dublin administrations if talks in Belfast fail to restore power-sharing in the region.

"The Union has consistently supported the goal of peace and reconciliation enshrined in the Good Friday Agreement in all its parts, and continuing to support and protect the achievements, benefits and commitments of the Peace Process will remain of paramount importance".

The EU insists that talks on future relations, including trade, can not begin until "sufficient progress" has been made on the divorce bill but the British side led by Brexit Secretary David Davis has been reluctant to agree to a figure.

He will also criticize what he regards as the government's "dogmatic insistence on taking Britain out of the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice", which he thinks could put vital European peace funding at risk.
