Thousands call for withdrawal of Suu Kyi's Nobel Prize

Suu Kyi, who was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1991, has recently been criticised for her lacklustre response to the ongoing crisis.

Contacted by The Daily Star, former Bangladesh ambassador in Washington, Humayun Kabir, however, said, "There is some movement in the USA and the policymaking circles are showing sensitivity on the uneasiness on the Rohingya situation". "Over the last several years I have repeatedly condemned this tragic and shameful treatment".

Suu Kyi's government is arguing that ARSA wants to establish an Islamic state in the country's north Rakhine province, where most Rohingyas call home. "The world is waiting and the Rohingya Muslims are waiting".

"No-one told me that I was to be interviewed by a Muslim", Suu Kyi is alleged to have said, according to the petition. "Once again, violence, this humanitarian crisis has to stop immediately", Indonesian President Joko Widodo told reporters on Sunday as he announced Retno's mission there.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif added in a recent tweet: "Global silence on continuing violence against #Rohingya Muslims".

Most human rights groups are referring to the campaign as ethnic cleansing. "We're urging all parties to take steps to calm tensions". "The dire situation facing our Rohingya brothers and sisters must be alleviated for good of Myanmar and region".

Critics have accused the Burmese leader - and Nobel peace prize victor - of turning a blind eye to the violent persecution of Rohingya Muslims.

A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding on the border of Bangladesh and Myanmar, the country once known as Burma. Thousands have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh within a week.

The violence by extremist Buddhist monks, who preach a risky form of religious chauvinism to their followers have caused killings of Muslims in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

New Report Suggests Joe Paterno Knew About Earlier Sandusky Abuse

The United Nations says more than 250,000 refugees, majority Rohingya, have fled Myanmar into Bangladesh since the violence began last October.

The makeshift camps set up at the time are being expanded but the International Organisation for Migration warns aid agencies "are now struggling to cope with the influx of new arrivals".

Witnesses in Myanmar's Rakhine state say entire villages have been burned to the ground since Rohingya militants launched a series of coordinated attacks on August 25, prompting a military-led crackdown.

A handful of people can understand the complexity of Myanmar. Some Rohingya are so desperate that they are fleeing Myanmar by boat, with many dying at sea. Thousands more wait in no man's land for a chance to cross.

Kayleigh Long is a freelance writer based in Myanmar. "This is forcing refugees to take risky and irregular routes to enter Bangladesh, which could have deadly consequences".

Police in Bangladesh say they recovered the bodies of 17 people, many of them children, who drowned when boats packed with Rohingya refugees sank at the mouth of the Naf River. Otherwise, he said, the violence could spread throughout Rakhine and around the country.

"Children are being deprived of education, they can not receive basic rights - and living in a terrorism situation, when there's so much violence around you, is extremely hard", she said.

Nobody can clearly guess how much room the government has to use its executive power in dealing with the military in handling the latest situation in Rakhine.
