Ryan Fox on fire in Omega European Masters opening round

Swiss roll a delighted Matthew Fitzpatrick with his trophy

"I'm delighted", said Englishman Fitzpatrick.

He had started the round three shots behind Australian Hend but the pair had to settle for a play-off.

Fitzpatrick earned a 450,000-euro ($542,000) prize for his first win since the season-ending World Tour Championship in Dubai last November.

Fitzpatrick, a Ryder Cup debutant previous year, acknowledged thinking that Hend would seize that chance after his own four metre birdie putt slid by the hole.

Hend is not only looking to secure a third European Tour title but make amends in losing out in a play-off a year ago.

Fabrizio Zanotti had reined him in by the turn but with the Paraguayan making two double-bogeys in three holes, Hend's 11-under-par total was enough to give him a cushion with five holes of round three to complete on Sunday. It's never nice to see, but we kept our nerve and just played really smart all week.

And there was resentment. "But I believed that it was my responsibility to try to offer answers, not to try to fan it". It was presented in such a really negative way, and I never could get out from under it. "It hurts a lot", she said.

Both players were tied for the lead at 14-under to go into a play-off. "He's a good champion".

Just a shot back from Melbourne's Todd Sinnott who birdied the par five, 14 also for a third day into succession to be tied with Fraser but with four holes still to play.

Two weeks off has worked a treat for Ryan Fox, who sits one shot off the lead in a share of fourth at the European Masters in Switzerland. The Englishman, 22, arrowed his ball to within six feet on the ninth to set up a third birdie of the day and when play ended he was one under for the round with three holes to complete.

The Australian entered round three at 13 under with a one-shot lead and despite dropping two shots in his first 13 holes on a tough day when two hours and 24 minutes were lost to fog, he extended his advantage at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

The 44-year-old Hend struck a magnificent iron shot to six feet from the pin, only to pull his putt for a third European Tour victory past the lip.
