'Iranian pilgrims' among 50 dead in Islamic State-claimed Iraq blast

A soldier returns injured with blood running down his face

At least 50 people including Iranians were killed in twin gun and auto bomb attacks near the city of Nasiriyah in southern Iraq on Thursday, according to a new toll.

"An assailant activated his belt of explosives inside restaurant, crowded, and a group of or men opened fire and threw grenades on guests", said Ali Abdul Hussain, colonel of police, Reuters news agency.

Today, ISIS claimed responsibility for 2 deadly terror attacks in Iraq's southern city of Nasiriyah. Mostly shi'ite and concentrating major part of oil production of country, region is strictly surrounded by security forces.

"Sixty people were killed, including Iranian citizens", said Jasim al-Khalidi, the Director General of Health in the Dhi Qar Province.

Attackers wearing security force uniforms and driving stolen army vehicles, used auto bombs and suicide vests to cause the explosions.

Turkey warns Iraqi Kurdish independence referendum "will pay the price"
Mahmoud al-Hassan, a Shiite Iraqi lawmaker, said it was no surprise that Israel would back the Kurds . Kareem is a vocal supporter of the referendum and campaigned for the vote also to be held in Kirkuk.

Local officials said the death toll was likely to climb with numerous wounded in a serious condition.

Shortly afterward, two suicide bombers, including one driving a vehicle rigged with explosives, blew themselves, Iraqi officials said.

The militants were supposedly dressed in uniform as members of Hashd- al-Shaabi, a predominately Shia group known to fight alongside Iraqi forces against the so-called Islamic State.

The area targeted is used by pilgrims and visitors from neighbouring Iran headed for the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala further north, although Dhiqar has previously been spared the worst of the violence.
