Motel 6 & Guest Lists

The Phoenix New Times reports that "between February and August, ICE agents made at least 20 arrests at Motel 6s, showing up roughly every two weeks". "This was implemented at the local level without the knowledge of senior management", Motel 6 said in a statement.

In short: If you live in Arizona and you're an undocumented immigrant, better not book a room at a Motel 6.

Staff at the Motel 6 on North Black Canyon Highway declined to answer questions from HuffPost about the New Times report and instead directed HuffPost to call its national media phone number.

In the first half of 2017, arrests of undocumented immigrants were up by 40 percent compared to the same period in 2016, and arrests of noncriminal immigrants more than doubled, according to CNN.

Employees at the two Motel 6 locations in Phoenix told the Phoenix New Times that it was common practice at the chain to share guest information with ICE.

After digging into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest paperwork, the paper has uncovered an abundance of incidents where ICE agents have curiously knocked on the doors of Motel 6 guests who happen to be undocumented immigrants. In the case of another immigrant who was arrested at Motel 6 and later deported, Ice had his specific room information, according to the New Times. "The client said he gave them a Mexican ID card - but there's people who visit the US all the time who have Mexican IDs".

Law enforcement officials are barred by a 2015 Supreme Court ruling from forcing hotels to turn in guest information, which may suggest that the Motel 6 employees had volunteered to work with ICE agents.

Rand Paul likely to get a war vote
US Senator Rand Paul believes that this legislation has bound the United States to long-running proxy wars around the globe. Paul says inaction by Congress is letting the White House unilaterally commit the nation to war.

"We just don't know enough about what's going on", he told the newspaper, adding, "I'll tell you one goddamned thing for sure - I'm not staying at a Motel 6 from now on".

Motel 6 tweeted its response to the reports Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for Phoenix's ICE division said that the agency "wouldn't be able to confirm how we are getting our information".

"We send a report every morning to ICE-all the names of everybody that comes in". And the Phoenix locations are corporate-owned, not franchised, which makes it less likely that these are rogue operators. "When we became aware of it last week, it was discontinued", the tweet stated.

Under the policy's "compliance with the law" section, it states that "we may disclose guest information to law enforcement agencies, or may be required to disclose it during the discovery process in litigation, pursuant to a court order, or in compliance with any applicable law, regulation, rule or ordinance".

An immigration attorney, Denise Aguilar, tells the New Times that some of her clients have heard these rumors, as well.
