School districts react to Freeman shooting

Freeman School District Superintendent Randy Russell

On Wednesday, the hallways of Washington State high school turned into the scene of a horrifying tragedy when 15-year-old Caleb Sharpe chose to bring his deranged obsessions with school shooting to fruition. All Freeman School District and all Spokane School District schools went into lockdown but the Spokane District lifted the lockdown just before 11:30 a.m. The surviving victims, who were in their mid-teens, were listed in stable condition, a local hospital said. He was being held at Spokane County juvenile jail.

Students said the shooter was armed with a pistol and rifle and had carried a duffel bag to school.

Spokane County officials said that a custodian, yet to be identified, stopped the shooting and took the gunman to ground before he put in handcuffs by a school resource officer.

Schaeffer confirmed the person in custody was the lone shooter and didn't release the suspect's age.

The group was preforming at the Spokane County Interstate Fair when they dedicated their show to the victims and families of the Freeman High School tragedy.

The shooter had many friends and wasn't bullied, Harper said, calling him "nice and amusing and weird" and a huge fan of the TV show Breaking Bad.

The sheriff said the shooter fired several more rounds, hitting other students, before a school custodian ordered him to surrender.

Three other students were wounded in the shooting and remain hospitalized, KREM said.

Authorities are responding to reports of a shooting at a high school south of Spokane, Washington.

A two-lane road into the town of about 500 people near the Idaho border was clogged as anxious parents sped to the school.

"I ask you please to join me in offering our assistance, care, and support to our neighbors in Freeman", said Ken Russell in a Facebook post. "I've never heard him like that", Moser told the newspaper.

"We're looking for every school to be prepared for an incident likely never to happen, but they have to be prepared in case it does", he said.

The victims who were seriously injured Wednesday at Freeman High School in tiny Rockford, Washington, are expected to survive. She commended the school district for its communication.

A call to the school was not immediately returned.

Elisa said she heard lots of screams as she crouched down.

Governor Jay Inslee called the shooting at Freeman High School "heartbreaking" in statement.

The United States has had an average of 52 school shooting incidents a year since a gunman killed 26 young children and educators in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun-control group founded in response to that massacre.
