Visiting Florida, Trump Praises 'Incredible' First Responders, State Officials

Donald Trump

Careful consideration was given to how Trump can visit the disaster zone and meet with first responders without getting in the way of recovery efforts.

Trump's trip to Florida was his third in less than three weeks to the storm-ravaged South.

Trump told state officials and first responders that his administration is trying to keep people "as happy as we can under the circumstances".

The White House has been keen to show that Trump is on top of coordinating the federal response to hurricanes Irma and Harvey - which earlier this month flooded Houston, Texas.

Sarah Sanders, the White House press secretary, made the announcement during Tuesday's daily briefing.

As Harvey bore down on Texas in late August, Trump and his aides quickly said he would visit the disaster zone within days of the storm's landfall. White House officials acknowledged that assuming the "comforter in chief" role was harder than it appears on television.

Power Out For More Than 60 Percent Of Florida Homes And Businesses
It also spread misery into Georgia and SC as it moved inland with winds at 50 miles per hour , causing flooding and power outages. Officials adjusted the evacuation plan for Irma as forecasts shifted the storm's predicted path further westward.

Trump is touring the storm damage in Florida, where many remain swamped and without electricity.

Trump, standing alongside Scott and other Florida officials, said he knows that "at a certain point it ends for you and we can't let it end".

"Fascinating to watch people writing books and major articles about me and yet they know nothing about me and have zero access". On the tarmac of the Fort Myers airport, he encouraged the state's governor, Republican Rick Scott, to challenge Florida's Democratic senator when his term expires. "So I hope he runs for the Senate".

FEMA also said it had moved 3.8 million meals and 3.4 million liters of water to states in the Southeast that were affected by the storm. Emergency crews around Florida are moving elderly residents from nursing homes without power, after eight people died in one sweltering facility.

In Florida, some 2.69 million homes and businesses were still without power on Thursday, or about 1 in 4 Florida customers.
