Catherine security guard shot himself

Brent Patrick Ahlers

Not wanting to face discipline for bringing a firearm to work, a white college security guard who shot himself on duty, sent Minnesota police on an hours-long search for a fictional Black man who he said attacked him. Meanwhile, the head of the St. Paul African American Leadership Council and the St. Paul N-A-A-C-P condemned the security officer's actions.

"It had residents of the Mac-Groveland and Highland Park communities fearful that a suspect was on the loose and they could be victimized at any moment", Ernster said. Scanner reports described a man in a navy blue sweatshirt and black jeans.

The officer, Brent Patrick Ahlers, 25, was placed on a paid leave of absence Wednesday while the investigation continued into his report that he had been shot by someone in a darkened area on campus Tuesday at 9:25 p.m.

The sergeant said 55 police officers and four K-9s, as well as a State Patrol aircraft, joined in the search for a supposed suspect Tuesday night. He told police he made up the shooting story out of concern he might lose his job.

Police conducted an extensive search and advised people to stay indoors as they searched for the shooter.

University president Becky Roloff said he worked at the college for 15 months and had no previous reports of misconduct.

Ernster went on to say that Ahlers was nervous about losing his job.

The local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) said that the incident just further reinforces racial stereotypes about black men. In addition, Ahlers violated the university's policy against having firearms on campus.

"The statements attributed to the former employee concerning the race of an alleged suspect are deeply troubling and do not reflect our values", a statement from St. Catherine read. Then he was treated for his injury, taken to the Ramsey County jail and released Thursday morning, per the Star Tribune.
