Facebook Removes Advertiser Ability to Target 'Jew Haters'

Facebook Allowed Anti Jew Ads

It was very easy to prove, and it cost only $30, which Angwin, Varner and Tobin paid the world's largest social network to target groups with three "promoted posts" - in which a ProPublica post was displayed in their news feeds.

Users who described themselves as "Jew haters" or "liked" subjects such as "How to burn Jews" or "Why Jews ruin the world" were shown the ads, according to the non-profit media group. Since the algorithm handles ad purchases from start to finish with no human input, ProPublica was able to get the anti-Semitic ads it purchased for its investigation approved within 15 minutes.

Their investigation also revealed the group "Hitler did nothing wrong" labeled as "fields of study".

"We are removing these self-reported targeting fields until we have the right processes in place to help prevent this issue", the company said.

Facebook's product management director Rob Leathern said in a statement on Thursday that while the social network does not allow hate speech on Facebook, content that "violates our standards" sometimes appears on the site. For example, the "Jew hater" category contained 2,300 people, out of Facebook's 2 billion monthly users.

An employee told ProPublica that the worrisome targeting categories were rarely used and a spokesperson said that they have been removed.

Trump injects Florida tour with dose of politics
Trump reiterated his hope that Scott runs for the Senate in 2018. "This is a state that I know very well, as you understand". Widespread outages led to long lines outside of the relatively few stores, gas stations and restaurants that had reopened.

Facebook's automated system suggested "Second Amendment" as an additional category that would boost our audience size to 119,000 people, presumably because its system had correlated gun enthusiasts with anti-Semites.

Prior to this issue, Facebook admitted that they have only recently discovered that $100,000 worth of ads were approved during the 2016 presidential elections.

This is not the first time Facebook's ad system has come under scrutiny.

Later, Harvard's research fellow Joshua Benton wrote on Twitter that internet users can also find similar categories using Google AdWords, but their range is even broader.

A Facebook executive reiterated in a statement that hate speech is not permitted on the platform and it bars advertisers from discriminating against people based on religion and other attributes.

The Google-owned company and social media giants such as Facebook and Twitter have been warned by the Government they must do more to moderate their platforms for hateful content. Initially, CEO Mark Zuckerberg dismissed critics' assertion that Facebook helped sway the vote in President Donald Trump's vote as a "pretty insane idea".
