Nursing Home Where 8 Died

Hurricane Irma

Hollywood officials said eight people between the ages of 71 and 99 died at the for-profit Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, but the causes were not yet determined.

At least six people died of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning from generators in Florida.

City officials said eight others died.

In Hollywood, the Rehabilitation Center said the hurricane had knocked out a transformer that powered the air conditioning. "It's one of the things we're doing aggressively", Scott said. Several other residents are reported to be in critical condition.

The woman with the camera then goes out into the hallway, where a naked woman who appears to be sleeping or unconscious is slouched on a gurney. "We cared for them like family".

"The people who were working there worked hard to make a good outcome for our patients", she said in a brief interview before hanging up on a reporter.

Hurricane Irma's devastation continues to affect Floridians, now leaving eight people dead at a nursing home.

In all, 141 patients were evacuated from the facility. The first occurred Tuesday at the facility; that individual had a "do not resuscitate" order and the deceased was transferred to a funeral home, but authorities have now retrieved the body.

The facility has had a spotty inspection record, earning a "below average" grade Medicare's nursing home rating system.

Search-and-rescue teams made their way into the more distant reaches of the Keys, and an aircraft carrier was positioned off Key West to help.

Each time the nursing home was cited for issues related to its backup power capabilities, administrators said they would correct the problems, according to STAT.

In a notes field, it states: "Have spot coolers and fans".

U.S. says withdrawing from Paris accord, unless terms change
Canadian environment minister Catherine McKenna said the participation of a US delegation in Montreal was a positive sign. In August, the US sent a notice to the United Nations Secretary-General stating its intention to withdraw.

The center, which police sealed off as a crime scene on Wednesday, was officially ordered closed to new admissions by the state's Agency for Health Care Administration.

Storey said the nursing home had some power but the air conditioning was not fully functioning.

The state's nursing home association said it tirelessly advocated help for its members before and after the storm.

An AHCA official at the state's emergency management center expressed concern Thursday to colleagues and nursing home industry representatives that some facilities have not been reporting their status to the Health STAT system twice a day, as required by the state during the disaster - suggesting power outages may be to blame.

Federal law now requires that nursing homes be kept between 71 and 81 degrees and have a backup power source in case of emergency. Federal prosecutors said that Michel received kickbacks as part of the deal and that some of the patients came from assisted living facilities that he owned.

The statement also revealed that 150 of the 700 facilities in the state of Florida still are not operating with full power services. "Portable A/C units were being used in the facility, but the facility was excessively hot".

When they arrived, paramedics were treating a critically ill patient near the entrance. The power generator was working, and the staff stocked up on seven days' worth of food and water.

Three agencies have launched investigations into how this happened, but many questions remain unanswered.

The Hollywood Police Department has opened a criminal investigation into the deaths. Others were found in critical condition, some with trouble breathing, said Hollywood spokeswoman Raelin Story.

Betty Hibbard, 84, who later died, was alive but extremely uncomfortable on Tuesday when her friend Jean Johnson came to visit. "So we did have two horrific storms, epic storms, but if you go back into the '30s and '40s, and you go back into the teens, you'll see storms that were very similar and even bigger, OK?"
