Take that Trump! California will be 'Sanctuary State'

California Gov. Jerry Brown left and Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon D Los Angeles

Under the bill, local and state officers can not ask about a person's immigration status or be deputized as immigration agents.

State legislators approved a measure early Saturday morning that would make California a sanctuary state.

Even after the negotiations, the bill is the most ambitious of its kind; in 1987 OR passed a law barring state and local officers from detaining anyone exclusively on immigration charges, and state lawmakers have proposed strengthening that law this year with amendments similar to the measures introduced in California.

"With SB 54, California will meaningfully improve state law to keep families together and communities whole-and not a moment too soon as the Trump administration continues its draconian and indiscriminate crackdown on immigrants". Jerry Brown drastically scaled back the version first introduced, the result of negotiations between Brown and De Leon in the final weeks of the legislative session. However, in a concession to Governor Brown, Democrats agreed the state prison system would be exempted from most of the requirements. The bill also prohibits police and sheriff officers from inquiring about a person's immigration status.

The measure cruised through the Senate and was expected to pass the Assembly before Brown blocked what many expected to be an easy lay-up to victory for de León and advocates for the undocumented community. But it now allows local police to respond to notification requests and transfers immigrants to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement if the individual has committed one of the more than 800 crimes outlined in The Trust Act.

President Trump signs resolution condemning white supremacy
He also called on Americans to "rediscover the bonds of love and loyalty that bring us together". Trump condemned "all forms" of bigotry in a statement after signing the resolution .

California's three investor-owned utilities, Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric, said the bill does not protect customers from the cost of switching from fossil fuels.

The bill does allow California police officers to communicate with federal agents about those convicted of hundreds of felonies within the past 15 years.

The Republican minority in the Legislature opposed the bill. "We believe in the American dream, and this bill today helps some of us believe California is a safe place for immigrants".

"The time for political posturing is over, guys", said Assemblyman James Gallagher, R-Yuba City.
