Sprint, T-Mobile said to be in "active" merger talks

Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure

T-Mobile and Sprint, two of the biggest mobile service operators in the USA, are reported to have been in merger talks, according to CNBC earlier. What would a merger mean for customers?

The latest speculation claims that SoftBank-owned Sprint and Deutsche Telekom-backed T-Mobile are in active talks about a stock-for-stock merger that would leave Deutsche Telekom as the majority owner of both carriers. The two sides have not yet set an exchange ratio for a deal, but are now engaged in talks to hammer out a term sheet.

In 2011, AT&T abandoned its plan to buy T-Mobile after the Justice Department sued to block the deal, saying that consumer prices could rise if competition in wireless was reduced. As reported, T-Mobile has yet to complete any due diligence on Sprint, and to further complicate the situation, heavy thought must be put into whether antitrust regulators would allow for the #3 and #4 ranked United States carriers to merge.

Nothing is set in stone at this point, however, as sources say negotiators are still weeks away from finalizing a deal. Well, we're back at the top of the rotation it seems, because CNBC is reporting that T-Mobile and Sprint are once again at the negotiating table.

Gamecocks take a step backward, lose to Kentucky 23-13
Skai Moore picked off Stephens on his first drive and Jaymest Williams recovered a fumble later in the first quarter. Kentucky has gotten off to slow starts in each game so far, having not scored a first quarter touchdown yet.

This time, given the all-stock nature contemplated, Softbank would emerge as a large minority holder in any combination.

Analysts and consumers took to Twitter Tuesday to express opinions on the possible merger.

Both companies have declined to comment on the matter. However, it is also being noted that current T-Mobile CEO, John Legere would be running the company.

The two companies previously held merger talks in 2014, that time with Sprint angling to become the majority owner of the two carriers, but the deal fell through over regulatory concerns.
