Manafort offered to give 'private briefings' on 2016 campaign to Russian billionaire

Matt Rourke AP

Earlier Wednesday, The Washington Post reported that Manafort offered to brief a Russian oligarch with Kremlin ties on the 2016 presidential election a year ago.

In this July 17, 2016 file photo, then-Trump Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort talks to reporters on the floor of the Republican National Convention at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland as Rick Gates listens at back left.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team of investigators has compiled thousands of documents in its probe of Russian meddling in the U.S. election and possible ties to the trump campaign.

The (dubious) raison d'être of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) - a post-9/11 layering of yet more bureaucracy atop bureaucratic sprawl - was to ensure efficient information flow through the "community" of US intelligence agencies.

"If he needs private briefings we can accommodate", Manafort wrote in the July 7, 2016, email, the Post reported.

Abe: Pressure only option for North Korea
He said aid-for-disarmament negotiations had failed in the past two decades, and concluded "not dialogue, but pressure" is needed. Asked about how he evaluates the performance of his son as foreign minister, Kono only said, "It is hard to make a comment".

Maloni said other campaign emails show that Manafort turned down a proposal from another campaign aide for Trump to meet with Putin and other top Russian officials.

It's long seemed odd that when Paul Manafort worked on Donald Trump's presidential campaign, he agreed to do so unpaid - despite being in millions of dollars worth of debt. While the Post reports that the "notes appear to be written in deliberately vague terms", several emails were sent after Manafort attended a Trump Tower meeting with Donald Trump Jr.to entertain a Russian offer to help the Trump campaign.

CNN said interest in Manafort deepened because of intercepted communications between him and Russian operatives, and among the Russians. A spokesman for Deripaska told the paper the emails were scheming by "consultants in the notorious "beltway bandit" industry". He and Manafort then set up a meeting in NY, which took place a few days later.

Making an offer to brief the Kremlin on the USA presidential campaign while also discussing "black caviar" to refer to payments Manafort was seeking ticks all a lot of collusion boxes.

Manafort's business ties to Deripaska were detailed in a 2014 legal action in the Cayman Islands. In July, for example, the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted an early-morning raid of Manafort's Alexandria, Va. home.
