Asylum Seekers To Be Sent To The US

About 25 refugees on Manus Island received appointment slips to learn if they'll be accepted by the US. Nauru

The people on Nauru and Manus Island who will be heading to the U.S. will find out in the next few days whether they have passed the vetting stage.

Three refugees from the African country of Sudan, now on Manus Island, have been accepted for resettlement in the United States.

Mr Turnbull reiterated that none of the refugees who were on the Pacific islands will be eligible for resettlement in Australia.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has confirmed this morning that the USA will honour an agreement to take on asylum seekers.

Australia instead pays Papua New Guinea and Nauru to house asylum seekers in camps that have been plagued by reports of abuse and draconian conditions.

The detention centre on Manus Island has been progressively shut down in preparation for its closure on October 31.

The agreement was the subject of a heated phone call between Donald Trump and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in January where the new United States president characterised the deal as dumb.

"President Trump had some reservations about it but nonetheless, he is honouring the commitment made by his predecessor and I want to thank you for doing so", he told the Seven Network.

In that call, Trump compares the refugees on Manus and Nauru to terrorists who carried out the September 11 attacks in 2001 as well as the San Bernadino shooters responsible for the deadly 2015 attack.

Canberra moved about 100 detainees from Manus to a Port Moresby motel last month as it continued to coerce about 600 refugees to leave the detention centre for a 400-bed transit centre in nearby Lorengau. "It seems there had been some discriminatory selection", he said. Australian authorities have yet to announce what kind of alternative arrangements it will make for the roughly 800 refugees who will remain there after that deadline.

"I hate taking these people".

"It is all subject to the United States' very, very thorough vetting - their extreme vetting", he said. And now I am agreeing to take 2,000 people and I agree I can vet them, but that puts me in a bad position.

For the cost of resettling one refugee in the United States, we can assist more than 10 in their home region.

The refugees will receive notification of the outcome of their application to resettle under the US Refugee Admissions Program in coming days.

The resettlement arrangement demonstrates the strength of Australia's relationship with the US.

Iran is one of the countries affected by President Trump so-called Muslim ban, blocking access to the U.S.to people from Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Iran and Yemen (Iraq was originally included but later taken off the list). In fact, the United Nations and rights groups have condemned the deplorable conditions at the Manus and Nauru facilities.
