Iranian officials, social media users get right back at Trump

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday ripped President Donald Trump's speech to the United Nations General Assembly a day earlier as "ignorant, absurd and hateful", charging that it would be a "great pity" if the 2015 nuclear deal his nation agreed to with the USA and other world powers "were to be destroyed by rogue newcomers" to politics.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said his country will preserve an worldwide deal on Iran's nuclear program but decisive response would be made to possible violation by the US.

Trump made major mistakes in his speech and leveled "baseless allegations that are beneath the dignity of the United Nations and the person who deems himself the president of a country", Rouhani added.

Trump has until October 15 to certify Iran's compliance with the accord to Congress, a decision he's required to make every 90 days.

"We will stop radical Islamic terrorism, because we can not allow it to tear up our nation and, indeed, to tear up the entire world", said the president.

CHANG: Did he say what Iran would do if the US tries to get out of the deal? He added that the United States "will certainly sustain losses" if it "tramples" upon the deal.

Khamenei said that Washington's anger is also rooted in its failure to advance its agenda in the West Asia region, where Iran has played an influential, dignified and successful role.

"An Iranian curtain is descending across the Middle East". He said he looks forward to discussing "the way we can seize the opportunity for peace between Israel and the Palestinians and between Israel and the Arab world".

Several of Trump's advisors, including Tillerson and United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, have argued that Iran's ballistic missile tests and support for terror groups breaches the "spirit" of the deal.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are expected to attend a European Union-hosted meeting about the agreement at the United Nations later Wednesday.
