James Comey Speech Goes off Rails After Student Protesters Heckle Him

Protesters interrupt Comey speech at Howard University

Hecklers tried to drown out a speech by former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey at Howard University in Washington, DC.

Howard University officials announced in August that Comey would serve as the school's Gwendolyn S. Colbert I. King Endowed Chair in public policy for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Before Comey had gotten more than a few words into the speech, protesters began to sing "We Shall Not Be Moved".

"I love the enthusiasm of the young folks, I just wish they would understand what a conversation is", Comey said at another point.

"I love the color of my skin!"

Mr. Comey gamely delivered his speech, at a ceremony marking the school's 150th opening convocation, amid disruptions from more than a dozen protesters in the packed, large auditorium who interrupted him repeatedly to let him know he was not welcome on campus.

Davis said that she agreed with the protesters' message, but added: "I do think Comey deserved to speak. I just listened to you for five minutes". Some of the phrases were "Get out James Comey, get out of our home", "We are here to reclaim this space", "Black lives matter here", and "No justice, no peace". "His expertise and understanding of the challenges we continue to face today will go a long way in sparking rich discussion and advancing meaningful debates across campus".

He said he looks forward to discussing "the way we can seize the opportunity for peace between Israel and the Palestinians and between Israel and the Arab world".

He also donated his $100,000 salary to Howard scholarship fund, but it's clear that the university's decision to bring him on board isn't sitting well with everyone.

The protesters never gave up, interrupting Comey over and over with shouts of 'Mic check!' in the style created by the Occupy Wall Street movement. "And at the end of a conversation, we are both smarter. I am here at Howard to try to get smarter, to try to be useful, to try and have healthy conversations".

Comey is expected to speak at Howard University at 11 a.m. ET today.

Student group HU Resist passed out handouts outlining Comey's Ferguson Effect and All Lives Matter views before his address.

After several more minutes of protests, Comey launched into his prepared speech - which, ironically, was about how the rest of the world is often "too noisy" to take time to reflect, whereas Howard University represents an "island".

"Howard University has always been different, which is why I wanted to be a part of it", he said.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump abruptly fired Comey in May, spurring allegations that he was trying to thwart the FBI's investigation into Russia's alleged efforts to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
