This hero teacher took down a gunman in a high school cafeteria

MHS Thursday-2

One student was injured when a gunman opened fire inside a central IL high school cafeteria Wednesday morning, school officials said.

On Monday, a student doused himself in gasoline Monday morning at Geneva High School in the west suburb, but was stopped from injuring himself.

Roads were barricaded, police say the scene was not safe and neighbors were confused and anxious.

Police responded before noon Wednesday for reports of shots fired and a person shot.

The authorities have not released the name and age of the suspect.

Branson added that Mattoon police were notified at 11:32 a.m. and upon arrival found the suspected shooter in the school resource officer's custody.

A message on the school's website said the extra precautions were being taken after they were "alerted to rumors of a possible shooting at Geneva High School being planned".

According to Hines, McQueen was in the building Thursday, where about 250 of the 1,000 students were in classes on a shortened schedule for a day of school that was optional for them.

Arthur said she noticed dozens of student walking in front of her house, which is near the high school, and she asked a teacher what they were doing.

Perry says even after subduing the shooter, McQueen continued to check on the well-being of other students. Parents may pick up their students there.

"Don't think. Just do".

Thursday afternoon, the Mattoon School District posted on its Facebook Page that "to the extent that we can do so under the law, we will release information as it becomes available". And I went up and gave her a hug and thanked her because she could have- that could have been a lot worse and she made it to where it wasn't, ' student Anna Morton said. "Her actions resulted in zero fatalities".

The Associated Press reported that teacher subdued the alleged shooter.
