Hurricane Maria may cause 'dangerous' beach conditions in USA southeast

Hurricane Maria Moving Away from Bahamas Turks and Caicos

A veil of high clouds from Tropical Storm Jose was responsible for the handsome color in the evening sky. The air is noticeably drier than it was 24 hours ago.

It is now about 900 miles east of Bermuda, moving north at 6 mph.

Dozens of anxious mayors are arriving to meet with Puerto Rico's governor to present a long list of things they urgently need after Hurricane Maria devastated the island.

Update 5 p.m.: Hurricane Maria is about 115 miles east-northeast of the southeastern Bahamas and moving north-northwest at 9 mph.

Maria is moving toward the north-northwest near 8 miles per hour (13 km/h), but a turn toward the north is expected by this evening.

Most global model members keep Maria meandering off shore and away from the East Coast, showing the storm eventually getting picked up by a cold front Friday and pushed out to sea. For now, we are looking ok here in CT, but we can't let our guard down just yet.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles (315 km). Jose has been almost stationary this afternoon. As a result, temperatures topped out in the mid to upper 70s, which is still above the normal high of 73 degrees for this date. The storm is now a Tropical Depression and is expected to remain over open waters and pose no threats to land. This will allow for more comfortable conditions tonight. Afternoon highs will remain in the 80s, and overnights drop to the 60s.

It's officially the first weekend of autumn! That is when the autumnal equinox will occur. The average high temperature in Boston for September 23rd is 70°.

The good news is that Sunday will see some sunshine, News 6 meteorologist Danny Treanor said. The northeasterly flow will diminish and this will allow temperatures to rise well above normal. It could be close! The high will be 87. It is going to feel more like the middle of summer, not the beginning of fall!

Monday will be mostly sunny and warm again. In fact, some of us could flirt with record warmth on Sunday as highs are expected to reach 90 degrees across parts of the area. An isolated shower will be possible east of the Triangle and the breeze will likely pick up on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The low was expected to move northward over the central Atlantic Ocean during the next few days, and there is a 10 percent chance of development over the next five days.
