The fire was burning alongside the eastbound Riverside Freeway, just west of Green River Road in west Corona, and initially spread at a "moderate" rate to Coal Canyon Road off the freeway, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.

By 2 p.m., 25 to 30 acres had burned in what was being called the Canyon Fire. "It's still kicking up". The department tweeted within two hours that the fire was at 1,500 acres.

California fire officials issued a mandatory evacuation for some residents in Corona, Calif., located about 45 minutes southeast of Los Angeles, as the wildfire threatened to burn multiple homes, according to fire officials.

An estimated 300 homes in Dominguez Ranch with between 1,000 and 1,200 residents were affected, Anaheim Fire & Rescue said.

Aircraft and more than 300 firefighters have been deployed to extinguish the blaze, which is only 5 percent contained, according to the fire service's latest updates. The strong winds once again eventually became a concern, grounding some of the helicopters and the big air tanker, CBS News reported.

At one point winds caused the fire to move towards the 91 Freeway, forcing a command post to be relocated.

Isaiah Thomas could return to Cavaliers by Christmas
Thomas's hip was so damaged that the Cavaliers felt the need to ask for additional compensation from the Celtics in the trade. Thomas averaged 28.9 points-per-game last season, which was third highest in the National Basketball Association .

But with some lanes closed, traffic was backed up for several miles and delays continued through the morning commute.

Crews were setting backfires, in order to keep the wildfire from crossing the freeway.

Authorities said more than a thousand people have been forced to evacuate their homes to escape a fast-moving Canyon Fire south of Los Angeles.

The fire prompted the Corona Norco Unified School District to cancel classes today at four schools - Coronita Elementary School, John Adams Elementary School, Cesar Chavez Academy and Prado View Elementary School - due to active evacuations, road closures and poor air quality, district officials announced on Facebook.

Santa Ana winds blowing 20 to 25 miles per hour were fanning the flames, according to reports from the scene.
