Portishead shooting: Man dies after police surround auto

The A369 was closed at Portbury, close to the M5 west of Bristol, Avon and Somerset Police said.

The injured man was then pulled from the old red vehicle by officers who began attempting to resuscitate him just off the M5 near Portishead.

The Avon and Somerset force has referred the shooting to the Independent Police Complaints Commission but confirmed it was not terror-related.

Commenting on the Hello Portishead Facebook page, eyewitness Mark De Lancey described seeing officers smashing the window of a vehicle and dragging a man out.

The image below, adapted from footage broadcast by Sky News, shows six bullet holes in the auto, a red Suzuki Swift.

Witness David Ellison told BBC Radio Bristol: "Police surrounded [the car]". They maybe shot with handguns five, six, maybe 10 times.

"It came off the roundabout towards Portishead and then was boxed in by cars".

Posting on the Facebook page Hello Portishead Mark De Lancey said: "I got up on the roundabout as the police were smashing the guys window and dragging him out".

"The vehicle left the motorway at Junction 19 and officers stopped the auto on the A369 known as the Portbury Hundred".

Earlier, police said the road had been closed "for some time" and an air ambulance had landed. "God knows what was happening".

"This has been a fast moving incident and is now under investigation by the IPCC".

"IPCC investigators are at the scene gathering evidence and are attending the post-incident procedures".
