George Brandis Labels Tony Abbott's Macklemore Comments 'Bizarre'

Former primer minister Tony Abbott was among thousands of footy fans who slammed the rapper for choosing to perform "Same Love" during the upcoming NRL grand final.

As opposition leader and then PM, Mr Abbott claimed flights, ComCar expenses and travelling allowance for him and his family to watch the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne in 2011 ($4841.39), 2012 ($2024.69) and 2013 ($3096.50).

With the same-sex marriage survey now underway in Australia, Macklemore's performance has attracted criticism and praise from both sides of the debate.

Speaking to the ABC, Senator Brandis has argued the song "topped the charts a couple of years ago".

Current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull - who says he will vote yes in the same-sex marriage postal survey - weighed in on Thursday, saying Macklemore should be allowed to play the song.

A petition against his performance was tweeted out by Miranda Devine and endorsed by Tony Abbott.

Speaking on the United States radio show The Cruz Show, Macklemore addressed the incredibly dumb controversy in Australia.

Trump HHS Secretary To Pay The Price For Private Jet Indiscretions?
Instead, he turned his back and continued to walk back inside the White House. "But we'll see what happens with Mr. Price didn't specify how much he would pay the Treasury for the flights.

"It's interesting actually, because I'm playing Same Love, and they're going through right now trying to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia", he told LA radio station Power 106.

There is indeed a petition on, which has attracted more than 12,000 signatures, to "remove LGBTIQ politics out of the awesome sport of Rugby League".

"So I'm getting a lot of tweets from angry old white dudes in Australia who I think there was a petition today to ban me from playing it".

The Coalition for Marriage, the leading No campaign group, accused the NRL of force-feeding fans LGBTIQ messages and making the grand final a "PC lecture theatre".

'I'm not sure this was meant to be a poltical statement, I think it was meant to be just more about entertainment, he's had a few mega big hits and I'll enjoy three of the four of them'.

The rapper has simply said in response to critics: "I'mma go harder".

He told U.S. radio that he was going to perform the song at the "Superbowl of their rugby" as Australia underwent "interesting times".
