The Trump administration announced today that it would temporarily waive the Jones Act, a century-old law prohibiting foreign ships from aiding in the disaster relief effort, for Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

Puerto Rico, the US commonwealth in the Caribbean Sea, is suffering after taking a direct hit from Hurricane Maria.

"We have shipped massive amounts of food and water and supplies to Puerto Rico, and we are continuing to do so on an hourly basis", Trump said. Rather, the DHS is presently reviewing a waiver request submitted by eight members of Congress, led by Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y.

"It is unacceptable to force the people of Puerto Rico to pay at least twice as much for food, clean drinking water, supplies and infrastructure due to Jones Act requirements as they work to recover from this disaster", he wrote.

Rodriguez and others organized a Hurricane Maria Puerto Rico donation drive.

The Trump administration had said a waiver was not needed for Puerto Rico because there were enough US -flagged ships available to ferry goods to the island.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Broke Royal Protocol By Holding Hands
The couple was photographed holding hands (which is a big deal ) as they made their way to the sporting event on Monday. It's thought they refrain from public affection because they are working representatives of the British monarchy.

"Right now we are in emergency mode".

The Jones Act restrictions were waived for Texas and Florida after they were hit by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma respectively, but not for Puerto Rico.

Between calls to boycott the National Football League and to support repeal of the Affordable Care Act, Trump's few tweets and retweets about the disaster in Puerto Rico have been vague and largely self-congratulatory.

Trump pointed out that the emergency response effort was made all the more challenging by the fact that Puerto Rico is not part of the U.S. mainland. A similar law called the Passenger Vessel Act was passed in 1886 and prevented foreign built and owned ships from ferrying passengers from one USA port to another.

The company also plans to use donated Facebook ad space to share critical information with Puerto Rican users, although the ads will be of little use until power and connectivity is restored.

"The FDIC encourages banks to work constructively with customers experiencing difficulties beyond their control because of damage caused by Hurricane Maria", the regulator said in a statement to US lenders.
