Russell Westbrook Agrees To Mega Contract Extension With Thunder

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook lets out a roar during an NBA basketball media day in Oklahoma City on Monday

Just when it looked like reigning NBA MVP Russell Westbrook would play out the final year of his contract and hit free agency, major news broke Friday afternoon on that front.

Oklahoma City announced on Friday a "multi-year contract extension" has been agreed with Westbrook, reportedly the most lucrative deal in National Basketball Association history.

The contract is now the richest deal in National Basketball Association history with his six seasons and $233 million through 2022-23.

Westbrook is coming off a historic season where he eclipsed Oscar Robertson's 55-year-old triple-double record and joined the Big O as the only two players in league history to average a triple-double for an entire season. He agreed to the deal on Durant's 29th birthday.

If you're not familiar with Google Shopping, it's that graphical bar that shows up any time you search for a product. On the one hand, such a move would separate Google's search business from its shopping service.

The Thunder reloaded a year after Kevin Durant's departure by adding Paul George and Carmelo Anthony, but OKC made it clear Friday who will lead the franchise going forward. According to NBA.com, Oklahoma City was 12.2 points better per 100 possessions with Westbrook on the floor during the regular season, and the team had a minus-51.3 net rating in the 46 minutes he was on the bench during the playoffs.

In the statement, Westbrook said there was no place he'd rather be than Oklahoma City and that he was "so honored" to continue his career with the Thunder.

As of Friday morning, Westbrook, George and Anthony all had the option of becoming free agents next summer. In adding Paul George and Carmelo Anthony to the fold, the team is suddenly considered perhaps the biggest threat to Golden State's dynasty - a belief that certainly played a role in Westbrook's decision to re-up for the long haul.

"Russell's commitment to the Thunder organization since its inception in 2008 has helped propel us to great heights and stare down great challenges over our first decade", general manager Sam Presti said in a statement, per the Norman Transcript's Fred Katz. Harden's $228 million extension signed July 8 averages out to $38 million per season. Westbrook now has the most lucrative contract in National Basketball Association history, just a touch higher than the new deals signed by Steph Curry and James Harden this summer.
