New Uber boss to hold crunch talks with TfL in licence dispute

Uber (Private:UBER) releases a statement on the "constructive" talks between CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and Transport for London regulators.

Uber's top boss in Britain will quit the taxi hailing app just as the firm battles to overturn a decision to strip it of its license in London, according to an email seen by Reuters.

Khosrowshahi's personal intervention came after TfL refused to renew Uber's licence to operate in London, saying it was not "fit and proper" due to concerns including safety checks on drivers and its attitude to reporting crimes.

Uber, not known for donning the hair-shirt, issued a contrite apology to Londoners for past misdemeanours, indicating the commercial significance of the United Kingdom capital to its business; Uber claims some 3.5mln people use the service in London.

"Following an approach from Uber, and at the mayor's request, London's transport commissioner will meet with Uber's global CEO in London", TfL said. TfL did not renew license of the ride-hailing service to operate in London.

Ever since Travis Kalanick was ousted as the CEO of Uber, the company has lurched from one trouble to another, and new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has his hands full.

An Uber spokesman said the firm had yet to file an appeal, but the company has indicated it will do so before a 13 October deadline.

A meeting between the new boss of Uber and London's transport commissioner to discuss the firm's future in the capital was described by both sides as "constructive".

In a sign of broader problems facing Uber, Khosrowshahi is also expected to call into a contentious board meeting in San Francisco on Tuesday which will look at cutting the influence of Kalanick, sources familiar with the matter said.

The meeting comes as Mr Khosrowshahi faces pressure in the United States over former Uber boss Travis Kalanick's influence over the company's board. Some are against the ban that has been imposed by TfL, while some others are protesting poor pay and demanding that Uber recognize them as employees instead of contractors. Its drivers can keep operating until then and potentially after that date if the appeal process is extended.
