Walmart Acquires Parcel To Test Same-Day Delivery In NYC

Walmart is moving in New York

Parcel will continue to deliver for its existing customers, but it will become the so-called last-mile courier for Walmart.com and Jet.com, the e-commerce company Walmart bought past year. Wal-Mart announced the purchase on its website, saying it paid less for Parcel than other acquisitions made this year, without giving more details on the terms.

The latest salvo is Walmart's announcement that it has acquired Parcel, a last-mile delivery service.

The announcement came just a few days after Jet.com, the online retailer Walmart bought a year ago for more than $3 billion, introduced higher-end, online groceries under a private brand that are aimed at younger urbanites.

Parcel's customers include Bonobos and meal-kit services like Chef'd and Martha Stewart's Martha & Marley Spoon, and will continue to serve current clients, Walmart said.

The deal, which Recode valued at less than $10 million, bolsters Walmart's ability to offer rapid delivery options in NY, something Walmart subsidiary Jet.com has already been testing. Parcel has New York-centric consumer data that Walmart can make use of, including a database with information on the buildings the company has delivered to, according to Recode. For residents without a doorman, the process of accepting packages when not at home can be hard. The startup then schedules a time to deliver packages to your apartment when you're home - for a small fee.

Walmart has continued to ramp up its online shopping business to compete with Amazon.

The move comes just weeks after Amazon.com completed its acquisition of Whole Foods, which has a large presence in New York City and will likely help Amazon accelerate grocery delivery. The company, according to a report in Reuters, has six full-time employees and a roster of 45 part-time employees.

The move also means Walmart has finally found a home in NY, where it's been blocked in its efforts to open stores for years.

In addition to its workforce, Parcel operates an in-house fleet of leased and rented vehicles to manage delivery needs.
