Ford to cut costs by $14B

Report – Ford’s new “Team Edison” is all about electricity image

Hackett said on Tuesday during a meeting with Wall Street analysts that Ford was late to focus on electric vehicles because it thought it was an all or nothing proposition.

"We have too much cost across our business", Hackett said. Jim Hackett was brought in to replace Mark Fields as CEO in March, and since then, he has been exploring ways that Ford can improve its business operations. Hackett traveled to Russian Federation and Turkey and visited North American plants and Ford's Silicon Valley research center as part of his review.

Ford also pledged to redesign its factories and add 3D printing, robotics, and virtual reality tools to speed up the design, development, and production of its cars, trucks, and SUVs. One of his first moves was to pare down the number of people reporting to him. These engineering tweaks are expected to save the vehicle maker $4 billion by 2022. The automaker plans to is reduce that to 96 in the next generation.

"The cost cuts include $10 billion in "incremental" reductions in material costs and $4 billion in engineering cuts as the company shoots to cut vehicle development time by 20%", reports Nathan Bomey for USA Today. Global demand for those vehicles is rising, and they are critical to Ford's bottom line.

Ford's production unit of Ford Focus Compact cars has been moved from MI to China. One of the slides highlighting Ford's strategy was a big reduction in the number of "orderable combinations" in future vehicles: For the Focus, the number will fall from 360 today to 26 in the future, for the Escape 2302 to just 228, the Mondeo (sold in the USA as the Fusion) 35,000 to 96, and the Explorer - not yet confirmed for Australia - from 1168 to just 672. The stock is up 1.7% this year, trailing Ford's USA peers and the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 Index.

Ford will add new SUVs across global markets, including more rugged, off-road entries in the USA - where Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV's Jeep brand now dominates that category - as well as larger SUVs in China and other developing markets.

A few hours later, he walked out of the Aluva sub-jail, waving and blowing kisses to his fans, who had gathered in large numbers. The legal battle ever since his arrest three months back was not very easy for him, just as his days in jail.

Jim Farley (Head of Global Markets), while conversing with investors said that Ford is carefully weighing the gainful and nonpaying businesses in Latin America and Europe and is looking for alliances there.

And the company wants to keep hatching partnerships with startups to boost research and development of autonomous cars.

"We have created a box of assets that we can pull out and use for various things", Klevorn said. The company had said previously earnings would rebound next year after taking a hit on self-driving investments.

John Rosevear owns shares of Ford. Ford Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks stated it could take until 2020 or later to achieve the 8 percent margin objective. He briefly led Ford's mobility unit before being tapped as CEO.

Rival General Motors Co has been installing built-in mobile broadband connections in its U.S. vehicles since 2015 and now has about 7 million 4G LTE connected vehicles on the road globally, a spokesman said on Tuesday. Ford's China sales are forecast to decline 4.6 percent this year, according to LMC Automotive, a far cry from double-digit growth just five years ago.

Ford stock closed at $12.34 Tuesday, up 2%. Ford has already announced partnerships with app-taxi company Lyft and pizza delivery company Domino's to develop autonomous transport for Lyft customers getting to and from a destination, as well as autonomous food delivery methods.

The new Ranger will be available in 2018 and the new Bronco two years later.
