Solar Energy Is Growing Faster Than Any Other Energy Source

Canada's renewable energy growth projections scaled back after Ontario scraps clean energy program: Report

Clean energy will grow by about 1,000 gigawatts in the next five years, according to IEA's projection.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said that, by 2022, renewables in general will equal about half the global capacity for coal power and its solar energy in particular that's leading the way. The IEA said the main drivers remain strong for new onshore wind and solar capacities, such as federal tax incentives combined with renewable portfolio standards as well as state-level policies for distributed solar PV.

The IEA expects China alone to add 40 per cent of new global renewable capacity. "The limiting factor is no longer cost ... it's system integration".

For the first time ever, there were more grid additions from solar power than another other type of fuel, the International Energy Agency said Wednesday. "This marks a turning point and underpins our more optimistic solar PV forecast".

"What we are witnessing is the birth of a new era in solar PV [systems]", he said in a statement.

The four North Korean suspects flew out of Kuala Lumpur for Pyongyang on the day of the killing and remain at large. The murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

A new report from the International Energy Agency surveys the growth of hydropower, wind, and other forms of renewable energy and finds they're catching up to coal (still the world's largest source of electricity). Notably, India will narrowly overtake the European Union for third place.

There are worries that India's rock-bottom prices will make its solar industry non-viable in the future.

China's push towards solar energy stems from the country's notoriously poor air quality, and in the country's 13th five-year plan, it announced an intention to increase the share of non-fossil energy to 15% by 2020. With many countries committing to fossil fuel auto bans and companies like General Motors Volvo moving away from traditional fuel models, electric vehicles are expected to double by 2022.

It also warned that growth of renewable energy in the European Union was set to be some 40 percent lower, as the bloc awaits the adoption of the EU's revised Renewable Energy Directive, which is now being discussed in the European Parliament, and would cover the period 2021 to 2030. Most new demand for electricity is being supplied by renewable resources, with solar providing the most. While coal is expected to remain the largest source of electricity generation in 2022, its lead over renewables will be halved.

In IEA's accelerated case that considers fewer policy barriers, clean energy capacity could increase by an additional 27 percent.
