'Blade Runner 2049' misfires at the box office

Blade Runner 2049 has made far less than expected on its opening weekend at the United States box office.

Its 163-minute running time, limiting the number of screenings, was said to be one factor in the under-performance.

Instead, the film grossed only a moderate $12.7 million on Friday, including $4 million from Thursday night previews.

Men over 25 accounted for half the audience, according to PostTrack, with women over 25 making up 27%. It seems a lot more people understand its importance in the genre compared to those who have actually seen the movie, which could be another reason why the sequel isn't doing as well as expected - many reviews point out that it helps to have watched the original. That now looks wildly optimistic: Blade Runner 2049 might not even make $100 million during its entire theatrical run.

The Rio 2016 committee's chief operating officer Leonardo Gryner was arrested in a separate raid in Rio on Thursday. The decision means subsidies and payments to the body from the International Olympic Committee have been blocked.

Warner Bros.is handling domestic distribution on "Blade Runner 2049", starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, through its output deal with Alcon Entertainment.

"We did well in the major and high-profile markets", he added. The movie was directed by Ridley Scott, who also made the original Blade Runner and was an executive producer on 2049. "Alcon and Denis made an wonderful movie". At the same time, Fox's The Mountain Between Us didn't exactly light the world on fire in its attempt at counter-programming, though it did top Mojo's pre-weekend forecast, while Lionsgate's release of My Little Pony squeaked over Mojo's meager expectations. Starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, the thriller had its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival this September. Reviews have been mixed, earning the film a 46% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on the Hasbro toys and TV series, the movie's voice cast includes Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Uzo Aduba, and Sia. WB's other movie in theaters, "It", is a sensation as it's now taking in over $600 million worldwide (made for only $35 million).

But it was still the weekend's most popular movie in the US. Focus Features' expansion of Judi Dench's "Victoria & Abdul" came in eighth with $4.1 million at 732 locations.
