Rupp and Dibaba take Chicago Marathon honours

Dennis Kimetto celebrates winning the 2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon in 2:03:45

Kosgei of Kenya finished second in the women's race, lowering her personal best by four minutes clocking 2:20:22. About 40,000 runners were expected to finish the Chicago Marathon by mid-afternoon.

Rupp clinched the silver medal in the men's 10,000m race at the 2012 London Olympics. The 31-year-old ran 2:09:20, a PB, followed by defending champion and Kenyan Abel Kirui in 2:09:48.

Rupp, 31, was the first American man to win the Chicago Marathon since Morocco-born Khalid Khannouchi in 2002. The last United States of America runner to medal in that race was Bill Mills, who won gold at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. I made the mistake in the past of going out a little too hard too soon and you still have a long ways to go for several miles.

The win is also a bounce back for McFadden, who finished fourth at this year's Boston Marathon following surgery for blood clots in February.

"I really wanted to wait", Rupp said. He won his debut at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials before winning a bronze medal at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. His win on Sunday is the first by an American man at the World Marathon Majors since Meb Keflezighi won the 2014 Boston Marathon.

"I ran without a pacemaker and It was hard to break a record, but I am pleased with the race and the result today".

It was the fastest time ever by an American women in Chicago and second-fastest all-time by an American behind Deena Kastor's 2:19:36.
