It's also the long-awaited sequel to one of the most acclaimed and beloved sci-fi films ever made. Considering it reportedly cost somewhere north of $150m (with marketing on top of that), that will not make for comfortable reading.

Monday's final result throws serious doubt onto what had been high hopes for a box office success story.

Also new this week is animated film My Little Pony with an $8 million debut.

After making $4 million from its Thursday night previews, Blade Runner 2049 seemed poised to make somewhere around $50 million domestically.

Perhaps this is partly due to the original film's questionable sexual politics, or because the marketing push focused on male stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford and scarcely included any one of its several important female characters.

Warner Bros. Domestic Distribution President Jeff Goldstein said "Blade Runner 2049" had fallen short of expectations in mid-sized and smaller markets along with the South and Midwest, where the running time and Major League Baseball play-offs appeared to have held down attendance.

Behrendorff also became the first bowler to send Kohli back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers in T20 global cricket. India clinched a comprehensive nine-wicket victory in a rain-truncated first T20I encounter JSCA Stadium on Sunday.

"#The Mountain Between Us" came in second place in its opening weekend, taking in $10.55 million from 3,088 theaters. Directed by Hany Abu-Assad, the United States dollars 35 million film tells the tale of two strangers who are stranded in the wilderness after surviving a plane crash.

"Blade Runner: 2049" is the highly anticipated follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1982 cult classic, set 30 years later. Based on the Hasbro toys and TV series, the movie's voice cast includes Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Uzo Aduba, and Sia.

It will close the weekend with a domestic tally of US$305 million so far, plus US$298.8 million internationally, to top the US$600 million worldwide mark.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle and American Made are duking it out to complete the top five, both on around $8.1 million.

This comes from 4,058 screens against a reported budget of $150 million.
