New Wave of Rohingya Refugees Reach Bangladesh

12 Rohingya Muslim refugees, mostly children, drowned as boat capsized near Bangladesh

"No government, no aid agency in the world can say that they are fully prepared to cater for these many numbers of people", Faizullah said.

In 2014 Dhaka banned marriages between Bangladeshis and Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim refugees following claims that members of the persecuted community were attempting to Wednesday to gain citizenship in the mainly Muslim nation.

Numerous refugees are reported to come from the Buthidaung area in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state, which is 20-25 kilometres east of Maungdaw.

"By this malnutrition programme, we're now treating 3,400 severely acute malnourished children".

More than 500,000 Rohingya Muslims are now living in camps in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar district.

Myanmar's government regards them as illegal migrants from Bangladesh, even if they have lived in the country for generations.

Rohingya refugees are shown crowded onto wooden boats as they set off to cross the Bay of Bengal on their way to Bangladesh.

India lose to Colombia in Federation Internationale de Football Association U-17 World Cup
But a momentary lapse, after a historic goal, meant they still returned empty-handed. Colombia had made seven attempts as compared to India's three.

Amid mounting global pressure, Myanmar's de-facto leader Aung Sun Suu Kyi addressed the parliament on Sep 19, when she said they were ready to take back "verified refugees" in line with a deal signed in 1992. Many women and children could not swim and had to ride piggyback on volunteer swimmers.

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled Myanmar since August 25 when the military launched a crackdown that had been decried by the United Nations as "ethnic cleansing".

Since Aug. 25, when the military launched a crackdown against Rohingya militants, 519,000 Rohingya have crossed from Myanmar's western state of Rakhine into Bangladesh, according to the UN.

While the worst of the violence appears to have abated, insecurity, food shortages and tensions with Buddhist neighbours are still driving thousands of Rohingya to make the arduous trek to Bangladesh.

The Anjumanpara crossing is a narrow point in the river, with no barbwire fence along some sections of the frontier, but it involves a perilous water crossing and walking through miles of paddy fields to enter Bangladesh.

Last week the guards destroyed at least 30 wooden fishing vessels amid increased concern they were being used to bring the popular methamphetamine drug known locally as Yaba into the country and using the refugee crisis as cover.

More than a quarter million Rohingyas left Burma and will confront a wide range of human rights violations, such as forced labour, extortion, and harassment.
