Potentially Defective Aluminum was used by All Car Manufacturers in Japan

Tokyo stocks up at break N. Korea fears ease

Japan's Nikkei share average edged up in choppy trade on Tuesday after a three-day weekend as the weak yen supported sentiment, but Kobe Steel's shares were set to plunge after it said it had fabricated data.

The revelation that Japan's third-biggest steelmaker Kobe Steel Ltd's fabricated data for some of its aluminum and copper products has left affected manufacturers scrambling to pin down the potential impact. They included Toyota Motor, Central Japan Railway, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mazda Motor and Subaru, the companies confirmed.

Kobe Steel said data had been falsified to make the metals look as if they met quality standards.

Subaru also produces wings for Boeing Co., but the aerospace company said nothing in its review has convinced it there's a safety issue. Nissan Motor and Mitsubishi are also top customers of Kobe Steel and said they are checking whether their vehicles are affected. A spokesman said: "We are rapidly working to identify which vehicle models might be subject to this situation and what components were used". For its part, Toyota said the news is a "grave issue".

- Honda said it used the materials in question for doors and hoods of its cars.

Will Kobe Steel become the next "Takata airbag" scandal to hit Japan?

It said that the products in question have also been used in another rocket scheduled to be launched by March 2018. Suzuki Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. all said they are checking whether their vehicles are affected.

So far, Honda has said the steel was used for auto doors and hoods, though it is unclear how much was used or the extent. The rocket cleared all safety checks before launch, the company said.

Las Vegas gunman left behind trail of clues but no answers
He fired 200 shots through the door, down the hall, wounding the guard, who is said to have alerted other security officials. Paddock first shot the man approximately six minutes before unloading dozens of rounds from his Mandalay Bay resort suite.

Kobe Steel CEO Kawasaki has run the company since 2013, and has recently overseen moves to expand its presence in aluminum.

Kobe Steel said the misconduct involved dozens of staff and possibly stretched back 10 years.

Kobe Steel's aluminium and copper operations account for about 20% of total sales, according to data for the quarter ended June 30.

"Aluminum is a strategic business for Kobe Steel", said Irisawa at Tachibana Securities. "We urge the company to make efforts to recover the trust of society as a whole, not just its customers".

Analysts say the development further tarnishes the reputation of Japan's globe-trotting manufacturers, long celebrated for their high-quality products.

The falsification was meant to make the metals look as though they met client quality standards.

In other recent Japanese product-related cases, Takata pleaded guilty in the U.S. in February to one count of wire fraud for misleading vehicle makers about the safety of its exploding air bags.

Kobe Steel has said the impact of the data falsification on its earnings is still unknown.
