New Waterproof Kindle Oasis Can Be Underwater For an Hour

Amazon has unveiled its first waterproof Kindle Oasis e-reader, which takes its place on the top end of the Kindle spectrum with a list price starting at $249.99.

The new Kindle Oasis ditches the battery cover of last year's device, which was needed to give it good battery life. Amazon has bumped up the resolution slightly to keep the same 300ppi display density as the outgoing Oasis, so graphic novels, illustrations and magazine images look just as sharp as before - only now they're larger.

Unlike last year's Kindle Oasis, which used a magnetic case you attached to the e-reader to extend its battery life, the new Oasis relies entirely on its built-in battery.

If there's one feature Amazon's range of e-readers has been in desperate need of over the years, it's waterproofing. On the hardware front, the Oasis now has an ambient light sensor, allowing it to adjust its front light automatically. You get 30 percent more text on the page at a time, which means fewer page turns. It only weighs 6.8 ounces and is only 3.4 mm thin at its thinnest point.

International Monetary Fund fails to update United Kingdom growth forecasts amid Brexit uncertainty
In its July projections, the Bretton Woods institution had said the global economy would grow by 3.5% in 2017 and 3.6% in 2018. Inflation remains muted in much of the advanced economies, and wage growth is weak.

The design is very much as laid down by the original Oasis, with a slim body behind the display and a pronounced bulge at one side, housing all the brains and the battery. If you're a subscriber, it will list your books alongside your Kindle titles - and if you want to listen, you can simply pair with either a bluetooth speaker or bluetooth headphones. Theres a 32GB version too, if you expect storage to be a problem (e.g. if you consume many audiobooks and graphic novels). Weighing in at 194 grams, the Oasis is still 10 grams lighter than the Kindle Paperwhite.

The new Kindle also has improved accessibility features including the ability to invert the screen from black text on white screen to white text on a black screen, and the ability to increase the size of key menus and the home screen for easier navigation for partially sighted readers.

Configuration-wise, the new Kindle Oasis starts at £229.99 for the 8GB version. The new Kindle Oasis also comes with fast-charging capability, allowing the device to be fully-charged in less than two hours. You can walk into any location and get quick tech support or free Wi-Fi for your Nook.

The new version of the Kindle Oasis is "IPX8 rated to protect against immersion in up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes", according to Amazon.
